Just across from Bab Zuweila is a short covered souk known in Arabic as Sharia al Kheimeya, or "Street of the Tentmakers." This may not sound like much of a shopping opportunity (after all, who wants to pack a tent home?), but the same vibrant embroidery used for centuries to decorate celebratory tents now finds its way onto everything from quilts to cushions. Much of the work is done in the little shops that line the streets, so you can watch the complicated geometry of the traditional designs slowly taking shape as you decide what to buy. If you have a few weeks, you could place a special order for a particular pattern in colors of your own choosing.
